Title:   Electrodes for Bioremediation and Recovery of Heavy Metals in Groundwater
Inventor:   Derek R. Lovley, Ph.D. and Kelvin Gregory
Summary:

Graphite electrodes positioned in the path of groundwater flow will serve as a reactive medium for the abiotic removal of contaminants and the stimulation of bioremediation. Electrodes are poised at a suitable reducing potential to remove contaminants and produce electrons for bioremediation. With an electron donor, growth and activity of Geobacter is stimulated. Geobacter reductively precipitate soluble U (VI) to insoluble U (VI), effectively removing uranium from groundwater. Once metals have been removed from the groundwater at the surface of the electrode, the electrodes may then be extracted from the subsurface whereupon the polarity of the electron will be reversed. The ions may then oxidize and desorb from the surface of the electrode for recovery and reuse.
